Depict Entry – ‘Invisible’

Type of moving image production

I produced a 90 second short film. This was for a depict competition where you had to produce a 90 second film. I can distribute the short film on online platforms such as YouTube.

There are many moving image media products out there other than short films such as:

• Feature films
• Adverts
• Trailers
• Factual Programs
• Music Videos

Finance and sources of funding

In the film and television industry funding is very crucial for movies for spending as they need to work out estimations of how much revenue they will produce and how much they are going /need    to spend on the movie. They will get this money from many sources such as:

• TV
• Online
• DVD sales
• Streaming Services
• Independent (Self-funding)
• Sponsorship
• Profits from previous movies
• Advertising (Product Placement)
• Bank Loans
• Investors
• Shareholders

Film Industry's spend this money on many things to improve the quality of the film to be bale to get more revenue. They will spend this money on things such as:

• Camera Equipment
• Sound Equipment
• Costumes
• Actors (Salary)
• Crew Members (Salary)
• Editing Software

My Depict Movie

For our depict movie we firstly had to obtain equipment for our depict movie such as sound equipment, costumes and sound equipment. Luckily our total spending for this short film was £0. This is because we borrowed equipment such as the boom mic, video camera and tripod. We also used the clothing we already had so in retrospect we didn't have to buy anything.

Personnel
Before shooting a movie, you need to realize what category your film is in to depend on how many crew members/actors you are going to have (makeup). For example, a Hollywood feature film is going to have very more makeup team compared to a television program, similarly a television program is going to have more of a makeup compared to low budget short movies, which ours was. Overall our total makeup for our short movie (including actors) was 4.

The makeup consists of many different roles in the film, these are some of the main roles in big movies.

• Producer
• Director
• Screenwriter
• Production Designer
• Costume Designer
• Editor
• Actors
• Music Supervisors
• Cinematographer

As we had a small group, we allocated ourselves roles which we had experience in to make the production quicker and we had multiple roles to get the production quality higher.
Jamie – Sound Recordist / Editor
Sarah – Producer /
Jack - Actor
Harvey – Producer / Actor

However other people must be alerted that we are filming for the fact that they might not want to be in the final production and furthermore they can be alerted well ahead whilst where filming, so they can walk around the set and do not disturb the recording. They also need to be alerted for if they watch us recording something sensitive, they need to realise that it is fake and in fact no one is getting harmed.

Time
Timekeeping is very important wherever you are but mostly for film production. Attendance is very important also. For our group we were not the best at doing so, there were lateness’s and absences for everyone. This gave us a huge problem near the end as when most of the people were finishing, we only just started filming. However, we scheduled and luckily managed to finish in the timeline we were given and manage to edit our final production before the deadline.

Equipment/ Facilitates
For our equipment we luckily could borrow the equipment from our college which cost us £0 the only item we had to pay for was the SD card. If we weren’t so lucky, we would have had to borrowed equipment. The Equipment we used in our production were;
• Canon 700D - £?
• Canon 24 – 70mm Lens - £35.00 Day
• Tripod Manfrotto - £15.00 Day
• BoomMic - £15.00

I got my information from Wex as it is a local camera shop hire situated in Norwich.

If I did hire actual equipment out for my price range, I would hire film cameras such as the Canon 7D. If we all contributed, we could possible hire high end cameras such as brand Arri.
We would do this by having a rates card. This is where we can see all the possible cameras, lens and tripods etc. We could then pick out the equipment we want and could possibly pick out studios, lighting's for our recording. This proves that we were lucky to have only payed for an SD card as film making does cost a lot of money.

Locations
To film in a location which is private you must have a recce. In that recce you will mostly need the people who will be filming, the crew and the actors, the date you will be filming on and any other requirements which they wish from you.

All our recces were in the same place, which was at our college this was so we could quickly get our equipment and start shooting as we didn’t want to waste much time. Our specific locations were:
• College Corridors
• College Disable toilet (Art Block)
• College Classroom (W12)

After getting all our recces completed, we set up signs and started shooting however there was a few problems along the way such as, in the corridors people kept walking past to get to there lessons, In the classroom we shot in students came in and got on with their work.
All of these were not real bad issues it just held up our production slightly.

Materials
For a production you will need materials such as a soundtrack. This will improve the quality of the film as big film companies use soundtracks for moments such as cinematics. For low budget films such as ours, you can purchase unrecognized music, or you could download free copyright music of the internet. You must check if they are copyright free though as if it isn’t you will have to pay for the license or you will get it removed.

Legal Issues
In big film productions legal issues is a big thing as if a film hasn’t got clearance then they could be sued for millions if they’re a big company, and for small businesses they could possibly lose all money they’ve earned and will be earned. Product placement is a big thing with legal issues as well as it is promoting the brand and normally brands will pay a lot of money for there brand to be in the movie, however if the production has a brand in which the
brand doesn’t agree with the films message / meaning then there could be legal issues there as it is linking the brand to the message.

Copyright
Copyright is a big thing nowadays, copyright protects your work to stop others from using it without your permission. Everyone can get copyright from there work when you automatically create one of these:
·         Artwork such as painting, photograph, illustration, music, artwork etc
·         Broadcasts
·         Television/ Film recordings
·         Web Content, Databases
·         Literacy such as books etc

For our production copyright was an issue as we had a song in mind for our production which would fit it perfectly however, we weren’t allowed to use it due to copyright, so we had to search for a copyright-free song which would fit our short film.

I got my copyright research from - https://www.gov.uk/copyright
